new site, some new work

12 May 2010

The past few weeks I’ve been logging long hours in hopes of getting my portfolio up to date. I’m not going to say that I’m 100% there, BUT… I do have a new site up with some new work, some old work that I never published, and some new takes on some old work, too.

As I’m always trying to improve things, please take a look around and then maybe come back and let me know what you think… what’s working? where could I improve?

check it out here.

  1. I love the new look! It’s simple and clean and gets out of the way of what’s most important—the work.

Here are a few suggestions that I have that will hopefully help the reader more then making it more beautiful because that’s not possible.

    1. This comment section has pre-populated text showing me what to put there. The problem is, and we’ve talked about this before, is that if you don’t put something down and click out of it you don’t know what should go in that field. Not a huge deal but a minor detail worth fixing.

    2. Because the font is grey I think it should be bigger to make it easier to read. I’m assuming it’s 11 pt font. If you are going to write about the work you might want people to read it. And without getting really close to the monitor it’s hard to do.

    3. Wow! I just noticed the macbook image with images changing showing the different pages you designed. REALLY COOL IDEA! Maybe you can do something to allow people the ability to pause, go back or scan through the images.

    4. The pieces are really close together. Separating them somehow either by more space or a bar or something might help the reader focus on 1 piece at a time. Right now it’s hard to focus in.

    5. For the contact link it might be a good idea to put a little email icon by it helping the user know that it’s a mailto link.

Anyway those are just suggestions. By no means does the site lose any of beauty by not doing the things that I mentioned. In fact it might take away from the beauty. Well done Cole.

  2. Hey Ryan, thanks for the suggestions.
    Just some responses…

I do need to look into the font, I think. It looks great on my monitor, but I’ve heard it’s barely legible on PCs. So, either way, that probably needs to be addressed.

The web image of Jon’s site is actually just a rotating gif, so there’s really no way to stop or go back. I think it’s better to conserve some space and simplify and get the gist of the site as a whole rather than dwell on specific pages. I’ll live with that concession, though.

Thanks for taking the time to look and offer some suggestions. I really appreciate it… as always.
